World Cup fever is sweeping the city, our nation, and well, every other nation. It’s time to get on board. For the duration of the tournament, remove ‘soccer’ from your vocabulary and replace it with ‘futbol’. You’ll know you’ve officially joined the fun, when it’s 11am and you’re spilling out of your neighbourhood pub chanting ” Olé! Olé! Olé! Olé!”
Even if you’re not a big sports fan, you can cheer about the design of the World Cup poster series. The posters were done by ad agency Widen + Kennedy with involvement of South African-based design collective AM I Collective. Together, they created one poster for each team. The vibrant colours and endless tongue n' cheek is worth a browse through the entire collection.
In Edmonton, close to 20 bars and restaurants have been granted special permission to open early for crowds wanting to watch World Cup futbol. Given the time difference, games are broadcast in Edmonton at 5:30 a.m., 8 a.m. and 12:30 a.m. Pubs open at 6 a.m. with alcohol being poured at 8 a.m.
So, where to go watch the games in Edmonton? Cheering for the English, head to Elephant & Castle. On June 25, when Spain takes on Chile watch the match at Azucar Picante Restorante and Cantina. Completely unsure? Little Italy is always a great spot for cheering, hospitality and passion for the game.
