Drink: Single Star

Edmonton’s Sherbrooke Liquor Store has a new brew: Single Star, an oatmeal stout aged in Jack Daniel's.

The process: Alley Kat Brewery’s Three Bears Oatmeal Stout is aged in Jack Daniel's barrels for 60 days.

The result: 480 bottles ($6.50/341ml) available for an extremely limited time.

The story: Single Star commemorates the beginning of the American Civil War, 150 years ago (today!) on April 12, 1861 when Confederate guns opened fire on Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbour, South Carolina.

The label: While searching for inspiration, the fine folks of Sherbrooke stumbled upon a print by Don Troiani entitled 14'th Mississippi, 1862 and depicts a soldier of that regiment sitting in Fort Donelson, Tennessee. You’ll note a “single star” graces the cap of the solider.

The salute: Raise a beer to the men who gave their lives in conflicts over the past century that have shaped their nation and ours, allowing us to live in peace. A peace that is not shared worldwide.
