Having grown up in a dance studio (not literally, but it sure felt like it), I was delighted to sit in on Citie Ballet’s morning class and rehearsal a few weeks ago.
They had just announced that the company received professional distinction, meaning that there are now six contracted full-time dancers. Before this, the company rehearsed mainly on weekends, and had little budget to carry out their season with.
Despite meager funding and time, artistic director Francois Chevennement and the company commissioned original work and bold collaborations for six seasons! And before that, artistic director and co-founder William Thompson for six as well.
The dancers are working extremely hard (dancing 9-3 every day) in preparation for the 2012/2013 season. With their extraordinary talents at hand, Citie Ballet compiled a superb three-production season.
The first production Gloria! will see the dancers in a mixed program of pointe, modern and neoclassical ballet.
We’re giving away two tickets to the Oct.14th performance, so hop over to the Citie Ballet Facebook Page to give them a like. Leave us a comment below telling us you did and be sure to fill out your full name and email (it will not be displayed.) Winner will be chosen on Friday, Oct.5th.
The winner is Melissa!
Note: all performances take place at the TIMMS centre for the arts, University of Alberta campus.
