In season in June (Market Picks)

(I meant to post this early June, and somehow the month slipped away on me! Did this happen to anyone else? So please excuse my tardiness and expect July's in season picks next week.)

One of my favorite things about summer, is the downtown City Market. While I also frequent many of the year-round markets, the atmosphere of 104th St. coupled with being outdoors gets me out of bed bright and early on Saturdays!

As someone who tries to eat seasonally, I also love this time of year for the variety of fruits and veggies. Here's my top picks for June along with suggested recipes from local food bloggers.

Pick bright green and crisp bunches. Use in salads, soups, smoothies (yes smoothies!) and try these recipes:

Spinach Salad with apples and cheddar

Egg, Almond and Spinach Salad

Quinoa Cups

Sundried Tomato, Spinach and White Bean pasta

Pick crisp and straight stalks. Get creative and use in stir frys or take the traditional route and make these desserts:

Rhubarb Crisp and homemade ice cream

Rhubarb Custard Tart

Choose firm and bright green spears. Use in stir frys, quiches or toss with olive oil and roast in the oven. Some ideas from Edmonton's food bloggers:

Salmon en Croute with lemon garlic cream and asparagus

Swiss Mushroom Asparagus Quiche

Romaine, Asparagus and Cucumber Salad

Look for bright, firm and plump berries. Eat fresh, sliced over ice cream or yogurt, bake into muffins and definitely make a shortcake:

Traditional or Chocolate

What produce pick do you enjoy most in summer?
