The Old Strathcona Antique Mall is such a fun place to visit. When you go, which you all should, plan to spend a few hours. The Antique Mall is a 27000 square foot space that hosts over 150 antique and collectible vendors under one roof. Each vendor has its own booth within the mall, and all of them specialize in different eras and styles. There is guaranteed to be something for everyone here, and it’s not expensive like the words “antique” and “collectibles” makes it seem!
The mall has been open for over 16 years and has been “selling memories” under a new mother-daughter management team for the last 3 years. Their goal is to bring in items that people of all ages can fall in love with, breaking away from the dusty, dingy, expensive stigma the “antiquing” industry has. There is a cute café that serves MacKay’s Ice Cream from Cochrane, and the booths are very open and bright. The store is always changing, too – they count on getting new items from about a dozen vendors each day!
What can one find at an antique mall? Well maybe we should use the words vintage, retro, and nostalgic to pique your interest. There is such a wide variety – records, furniture from all eras, kitchen items (glassware, cookware, etc), china, toys, clothing, jewelry, figurines, lighting, tools, and more - all reasonably priced. I used to hate “old things” but since becoming addicted to Mad Men, I’ve frequented the Antique Mall to add glassware and home décor straight out of the 1960s. It’s also really fun to look around and see toys that I used to play with as a child (we meet again, Strawberry Shortcake!) or have my parents explain what some other odds and ends are used for.
Visiting the Old Strathcona Antique Mall makes for a really enjoyable afternoon. I recommend everyone take a walk around the place. You never know what you’re going to find, which is what makes it so fun!
