Market Monday :: A Little Taste of Home

Birds & Bees Organic Winery & Meadery
Beverly Towne Farmers’ Market
Tuesdays, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
(and mostly all large markets in the Edmonton area)

Discovering Birds & Bees Organic Winery & Meadery (B&B) was an exciting find. I explore a lot of Farmers’ Markets and I’ve come to have certain expectations of each market I go to: the irresistible aroma of kettle corn, proud displays of hand-crafted goods and mass amounts of colourful produce. What I did not expect to find was a beautiful display of not just wine, but certified organic Alberta wine.

As Alberta’s first (and only) organic-fruit cottage winery, B&B is about as local as fine wines can get. Located just 90 miles northeast of Edmonton in Brosseau, Alberta, B&B is a family owned and operated business. The farm itself has been around since 1927, and up until 2005, it boasted a proud tradition as a low-impact hog farm.

These days it is an award-winning OCIA certified winery, with a selection of fine wines and meads made entirely from plants and fruits indigenous to Alberta.

“People think that because grapes aren’t easily grown in Alberta, that we can’t make good wines here. That just isn’t true,” said Tina Haring, wine diva for B&B, “We can make delicious wine from raspberries, blueberries, apples and even rhubarb.”

From a woody and tart wine made from organic alfalfa, to an off-dry, easy-drinking aperitif made from Saskatoon berries, to their token, yet versatile, semi-sweet Meads (wines made from natural honey) B&B has a flavour for every variety of wine connoisseur.

I discovered B&B at the Beverly Towne Market, but Haring said you can find them at nearly every market in the greater Capital region, on almost any day of the week.

So go discover B&B for yourself. On a late summer’s eve, on a patio, savour a fragrant glass of violet, rosé or golden tones of fragrant Saskatoon berries, wild cherries or all natural honey.
