Edmonton Weekend Guide :: June 26-July 1 :: Canada Day Long Weekend

Hopefully many of you get to enjoy a work-free (or not-so-busy-at-work) Monday before the first big celebration of the summer: Canada Day! Warm up your singing voices to sing happy birthday to our great country on Tuesday. Hmm... is singing O Canada the same as singing Happy Birthday to Canada? We'll sing both, just in case!

Shop: Wild Prairie Soap Co.'s Garden Party Sale
Every Friday: Park After Dark at Northlands Park
Sold Out: Creative Mornings Edmonton
Buy these tickets now: Museum After Dark (July 5th)

This sounds fun: Track MEÆT is an evening of scavenger hunting and strategy, plus a meal and a home-grown ideas competition. Winning pitch takes home some cash from ticket sales. Thursday night from 6-9pm. Read a thorough explanation and get your ticket (quick!) here.

Rapid Fire Theatre hosts international sketch comedians, improvisers, stand-ups and musicians for Improvaganza. Laugh out loud at one of the shows, sign yourself-up for a workshop and attend a social event. Want a guaranteed laugh? Get your tickets to the final shows on Saturday.

The city-wide celebration of jazz continues - Edmonton International Jazz Festival! Concerts of all sizes hit stages across Edmonton. It might not be Montreal's, but it's our gem of a festival. Unfamiliar with jazz? Even better - it's all about jazz for everyone. Attend an event and you'll soon be a regular at the Yardbird Suite.

The Works Art & Design Festival continues to show off our city's creativity with over 200 exhibits and events for everyone. It's all around town!  From Sir Winston Churchill Square to the Arts District, you'll find art on display in the most mesmerizing places. Check out the festival guide and plan your free events.

Another art festival! Found Festival features 12 shows and 80+ artists from June 26-29 in Old Strathcona. An exciting part of this festival: a not-so-secret flash mob along Whyte Avenue on Friday night at 8pm. Learn the moves and join in!

Things to do in Edmonton on Canada Day

Alberta Legislature
Start your entire day of fun with a 21 Gun Salute at noon on the front steps! The legislature is open for tours, antique cars will be on display, there is food and fun for kids of all ages. Get an early start at the legislature grounds in the Canada Day Road Race.

City Hall & Churchill Square
As usual, City Hall has a day of fun with live music, entertainment, activities and food for the entire family. Pop over here to see all the details. Churchill Square will have some extra activity with The Works Art & Design Festival wrapping up its last day.

More Celebrating
There are so many places you can spend your holiday and they are all offering special Canada Day activities. May we suggest:

Light the Bridge
The High Level Bridge will light up for the first official time (you may have caught some testing nights) on Canada Day. A successful (and polarizing) grassroots initiative with a $2.5 million goal reached. Wow!

Fireworks
The City of Edmonton puts together a nice list of great viewing spots for the Canada Day Fireworks Finale over our downtown and river valley at 11pm on Canada Day.
