Gifts to GIVE
Seanings Typographic T-Shirt, $27+ Up
Sean Williams, an Edmonton-based designer and commercial photographer, creates the coolest custom typographic illustrations of famous people you love like musicians Jay-Z and Justin Timberlake, and TV-show stars Daryl Dixon and Walter White. You choose the t-shirt cut (women’s or men’s), the color and size. I’d wrap one of these t-shirts up for everyone on my list.
Where We Are From Poster, $30
This brilliant poster by graphic designer Jaime Calayo explores the many neighbourhoods that make up Edmonton. Frame it up for the perfect gift any Edmontonian.
The Gift of Sweat
My life is full of active people: runners, yogis, triathletes, and workout bunnies. For someone who really loves to sweat, I’d buy a 10-pass to her favourite yoga studio or a personalized running training plan from McMillan Running. Two of my fav workout finds over the past year: a yoga traveling mat and Yurbuds smart earphones that actually stay in while working out.
The Beauty of Handmade
Edmonton is exploding as a community of makers. Everyday, I'm impressed by the talent of artists and designers in our city. These are just a few of my favourites:
Amor Jewelry: Beautiful jewelry made in a home studio in Edmonton. The collection is always evolving but currently features brass, copper and a distinct love for triangles.
Kimder Handbags: The collection of ‘day to night’ handbags are designed and made by Kimberly Der. Each bag is lovingly named after an influential woman in Kimberly’s life. The handbags are beautiful and practical for any lady.
Patina Jewelry: The jewelry is made from upcycled vintage and found objects making every piece of jewelry entirely unique. Earrings, necklaces and bracelets are handmade by Tina Faiz and Kristel Busby in Edmonton.
On My Wishlist
Silver Iris Cologne Absolue ($195): Every year, perfume graces my wish list. I’m drawn to beautiful, long lasting perfumes from Atelier Cologne, a small Maison de Parfum in France. The scents are lovely, powerful and insanely long lasting due to concentrated essential oils. Atelier Cologne uses only the most precious ingredients, sourced the world over. Silver Iris Cologne Absolue combines patchouli from Indonesia, tonka bean from Brazil, mimosa from Grasse, violet leaves from Grasse, and blackcurrant from Burgundy for an intoxicating scent.
Garmin Forerunner 620, $476: I’m not one for gadgets but this running watch acts as an advanced trainer by estimating my VO2 Max to predict target race times. It’s Bluetooth-enabled directly uploading my workouts to my iPhone. Plus, it creates customized workouts, pre-loads intervals, and measures cadence, vertical oscillation and ground contact time. Super running-nerdy? Yes. Still want it? Absolutely.
The Cookbook Collection: I love cookbooks. I read them front to back, just like a novel. Cooking and baking is my creative happy spot. Cookbooks challenge and inspire me to think in new directions. On my cookbook wish list: Ottolenghi: The Cookbook, Japanese Farm Food and Hugo Ortega's Street Food of Mexico.
Can’t Miss Event
I’m convinced the holidays will be twice as nice with festive jams, holiday tunes and beautiful sounds of the season. For warm and fuzzy indie tunes checkout of Deep Winter Song for an acoustic musical presentation exploring the winter solstice. The Edmonton Symphony with orchestral, vocal and choral masterpieces, sing-along tunes and all around good cheer.
