As a new auntie, I'm blown away by the big price tags I see on baby items that new moms need to buy. It breaks my heart to imagine the financial burden on top of that facing new families who unexpectedly need care for their kids at Stollery Children's Hospital.
This was a realization that Andrea Peyton, founder of Weehelp Foundation, had when a family friend was in that situation. She was compelled to help, and knew there was an abundance of outgrown baby stuff around that could help. So she set out to collect gently used baby items to sell and give all the money to the Stollery. Starting slow with garage sale leftovers, she was overwhelmed by all the goodies that families are happy to donate.
Fast forward to a year and a half later: her house is now overtaken by kids items that she picks up, launders, cleans, replaces batteries, and prices in preparation for the sales. All the money from the sales go towards Stollery Children's Hospital. She doesn't keep a penny for herself. So far, she has donated over $10000, recruited the help of local businesses, and started Edmonton's only car seat recycling program.
The sales are a win-win-win: parents stock up on all the necessities (and more) at ridiculously low prices, donors feel good knowing their previously loved items are going to a happy home, and the kids at the Stollery continue to receive the care they need. Help to spread the word about Saturday's sale, and contact Weehelp if you have items you'd like to donate. See you there with my little niece in tow!
